In Loving Memory

Hughlet “Ogy” Charles

February 13th 1939 – July 12th 2021

Obituary:

Hughlet peacefully passed away on July 12th, 2021, at age 82. He was born in Devon, St. Ann to James and Merita Charles on February 13, 1939. He completed his primary studies in the parish of St. Ann, Browns Town and his secondary education, attaining High School and Accounting Certificates in Mandeville, Manchester at West Indies College High School. Hughlet later moved to Kingston where he pursued and completed diplomas in (1) Personnel and Industrial Relations Management at C.A.S.T, now the University of Technology and (2) Human Resource Management at the University of the West Indies. Hughlet was a Human Resources Manager for 20 years at Container Services Limited where he impressed his employers,  inspired his peers and went out of his way to make sure his employees were fairly treated. He settled in Hope Pastures and married his beautiful wife, Hyacinth ‘Ver’ Parkins. They had four children, who gave him eleven grandchildren. He was a stern but loving father whose persistent dedication and love for his children motivated them to become successful adults. This assiduity and endearment also extended to the many others he adopted and loved as his own children.

As a child, Hughlet grew up with his six siblings, learning to love and care for all the animals on his father’s farm. He went on to win the first prize at the yearly island-wide Cow Milking Competition held at the Jamaica Agricultural Food Show in Denbigh, May Pen, Clarendon and was credited for being the youngest winner. This unwavering love for animals did not stop there. Over the past forty plus years, Hughlet developed a deep love for dogs, and honed his unmatched skill for breeding German Shepherd and Doberman Pinscher dogs. His additional success, however, coming from his keen eye for identifying champions, made him the leading German Shepherd and Doberman Pinscher breeder in Jamaica and the Caribbean at-large. His dogs have won numerous trophies and top awards, to name a few, Dog of the Year, Best in Show, and Best Locally Bred. To this day, Hughlet is arguably credited to have the most champions EVER bred in both German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers categories combined. His commitment and diligence were paramount in setting high standards for those who followed him in this field. Hughlet made it a point of duty to teach all individuals that chose to breed dogs, the business and care for the animals. By imparting this knowledge and information, the relationships impacted not only the dogs’ lives but also the individuals who cared for the dogs. His name, kennel, and line, live on through his kennel handle, Hychas Kennels.

Throughout his entire life, Hughlet most importantly held an unwavering faith in God through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving. He continuously shared his Seventh Day Adventist beliefs with those who surrounded him and to everyone he would meet. Hughlet loved to discuss Bible Prophecy and The Three Angels’ message which promoted a deeper relationship with Christ Jesus each day he lived on this earth. His favorite bible character was the Apostle Paul and would find joy in reciting 2 Timothy 4:7-8, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

Hughlet is survived by his beloved family, sisters and brothers, loving nieces and nephews, God-children, and faithful friends who will miss him dearly. He joins his loving sister Norma, and brother Claude, who have already passed, and awaiting the great resurrection morning to see and live with Jesus in the earth made new. Hughlet’s greatest wish is to see everyone he holds dear in Heaven on that wondrous day.

Hughlet’s Thanksgiving service will be held at Andrews Memorial SDA Church, Kingston, Jamaica. Interment will follow at the family plot in Moneague, St. Ann.
